About School

A unique Japanese language school that offers five tailored course programs, including an exclusive Art University and Professional Training Colleges. Toyo Language School adapts lessons to the classes they are teaching, allowing you to direct your studies as necessary. Classes are not tailored to “JLPT” levels, but rather to “what you can do”. A personal teacher, who acts as your partner, helps you choose how you learn and how fast you learn.

Known for their “JCT” (Jikkei Japanese Monitoring, Counseling and Targeting), Toyo Language School has built the perfect, personalized assessment method called “My Teacher” system. From admission to graduation, each student gets one teacher who will consult with them every three months to talk about their next goal, area of improvement and concerns. Through this, teachers can adapt their methods and materials to the needs of the class, rather than following a specific textbook.
They offer five tailor-fit programs: Professional training college, university, graduate school, art school, and employment. Their goal is to support students in achieving their goals, which means they’ll teach the Japanese language and professional skills specific to their area of interest.

The school is located in Nishi-Kasai. Best known for its spacious bayside park, the area is often referred to as Tokyo’s “Little India” due to its prominent Indian population and culture. It’s a green and peaceful part of town filled with parks, streams and rivers. From here, you can take part in a number of popular spots like the Tokyo Sea Life Park and aquarium within Tokyo Kasai Rinkai Koen. Nishi-Kasai is also only a 30-minute ride to Tokyo Disneyland.

School Facilities

The school provides modern student lounge and library for study or leisure. A few minutes from the campus, students can opt to live in a state-of-the-art dormitory, although assistance in finding an apartment outside are available.

I like the fact that every three months, you have a personal assessment to see where you are, how you like to improve and where you want to go next. You have a teacher who’s assigned to you, and you can discuss what you want to focus on for the next three months.

What stands out most about Toyo Language School?

I like the fact that every three months, you have a personal assessment to see where you are, how you like to improve and where you want to go next. You have a teacher who’s assigned to you, and you can discuss what you want to focus on for the next three months. For my first three months, I was in the JLPT class, but now I’m in the university preparation class, which is more accommodating to what I want.

Speaking of which, what are your plans to go after school?

Music school. I’ve been busy with my entrance exam preparations, which is a bit atypical of other university admission tests.

How does the school help you with these preparations?

They help me with document preparations, how to write my application in Japanese and have you really prepared for interviews. Every trimester, you have a conversation assessment test. The teacher plays the role of the jury and asks questions, and you have to answer like it’s a real interview session.

So far, what do you think of the school area?

It’s very calm and peaceful — which is great for studying. There are lots of cool restaurants near the station, and my friends and I have tried everything. On my days off, I like to go to Shibuya and Shinjuku.

How has your life changed since you studied at Toyo Language School?

I can feel how much I’ve progressed since six months ago, both in Japanese language skills and in living. Recently, I have had a part-time job too, so I’ve been juggling between school, work and university preparations.

Who do you think this school is perfect for?

Someone who wants to go to a good university in Japan. Toyo has partnership programs with other universities. There are open campuses and preparations for job hunting. I’m really glad I came here because they give me all preparations I would never have been able to do by myself.

Even when I’m not their student anymore, I can always go to them to ask for advice and open up about anything — they still help me today.

After graduating from Toyo, how has your life been?

I decided to work for 1 year to get a grip on how Japanese society works. I’ve been studying game programming at Tokyo Communication Arts College since April 2020.

How has the school prepared you for your life in Japan after you graduated?

I never had any problem with the Japanese language or the manners because the school has prepped us with all the necessary etiquette and expressions. Even when I’m not their student anymore, I can always go to them to ask for advice and open up about anything — they still help me today.

Anything you miss during your time at Toyo Language School?

A lot of things, but most of all getting to talk with my teachers. It’s always been fun to learn with them. Oh — and my morning and afternoon lessons. I get a lot more free time to travel and have fun!

What about something you enjoyed the most about studying here?

Knowing that your teachers also help you figure out what you want to do in the future. I also liked the school location. The neighborhood is calm compared to the center of the city.

Any goals you want to achieve in Japan?

Work for a Japanese company for a few years. And then start my own company.

What’s your go-to advice for anyone who wants to study in Japan?

Think about your budget and make a long-term plan for when you graduate because the two years you’ll use to study Japanese will go by fast.

Teacher Interview

Ishikawa Sensei
We want students to find the importance of learning Japanese beyond its face value. After all, real education is when you grow independent and learn about teamwork. The constant need to “know” is what we want to nurture among students.

What was your first meeting like with the school?

I still remember when I was still a teacher candidate. Toyo Language School gave us a three-hour recruitment session to tell us all about the school’s philosophy — and what kind of students they want to educate and send out to the world. It’s completely different from most hiring schools that hire based on demo lessons, but I knew this is the place I want to be. Eight years later, and I am still a teacher here.

Students you want to educate and send out to the world. Can you tell us more about it?

We want students to find the importance of learning Japanese beyond its face value. After all, real education is when you grow independent and learn about teamwork. The constant need to “know” is what we want to nurture among students.

What about Toyo Language School’s teaching philosophy?

We take pride in our diverse student population. We value everyones’ needs and, most of all, curiosity. Learning a language becomes fun and effective when this curiosity blossoms. We want learners to choose their own path.

Toyo Language School is known for their very unique assessment method. Can you tell us more?

We implement a My Teacher system that allows each student to consult with an assigned teacher about their problems. This teacher serves as a consultant from admission to graduation — no rotating every semester. This means each teacher knows their students personally and are able to support the students in a position like a partner to achieve their goals together.

Tell us a time you feel most proud as a teacher recently.

Last year, among the students I was in charge of, there was a student who had great Japanese ability and was very enthusiastic, but was having trouble getting into university. After many discussions, I came up with a strategy and was very happy when I finally received the news that they had been accepted to their first choice!

What kind of school would you like to recommend to students who are choosing a school?

Toyo Language School is a school that responds to your desire to learn. There are 14 levels in all classes. Classes are not tailored to JLPT levels, but rather to “what you can do”. And you can choose how you learn and how fast you learn. Our duty is to advise and support you throughout your journey as a partner.
