Required Documents For The Applicant’s Japanese Student Visa Application
Below is a list of commonly required documents for applying to a Japanese language school and for a Japanese student visa. Required documents may vary depending on your background.
School Application Form
Applicants must complete and submit the official application form provided by the Japanese language school. This form includes personal information, educational background, and course details, and may also contain agreement forms or other legally required documents.
Diploma from your last school
You must submit a diploma from your most recent school as proof of your academic background. A high school diploma (minimum 12 years of education) is required in order to be eligible for a Japanese student visa.
High-resolution ID Photo

You need to take a recent photo of yourself against a plain white background. The photo should be no older than three months and ideally high-resolution. The passport-style photo must be printed at 3×4 centimeters. For your attire, you don’t need to wear a black-and-white suit, but please avoid hats, scarves, or any head-covering clothing (unless for religious reasons). You should also face forward, without tilting your head or making extreme expressions.
Scanned Passport
A valid passport is required to apply to a Japanese language school. Please ensure your passport remains valid for the duration of the application; if it is nearing expiration, it must be renewed before you apply.
If you do not currently have a passport, you will have enough time to apply for one before your departure to Japan. Since applications for Japanese language schools close six months before the start of the semester, this timeline allows ample time for preparation.
If you already have a passport, you will need to submit a scanned copy of the photo information page (showing your passport number and photo). Additionally, if you have previously traveled to Japan, please include scanned copies of all relevant entry and exit stamp pages, as these are also required.
Travel Stamps and Flight Details (If Applicable)
If you have previously visited Japan, you must submit scanned copies of all entry and exit stamp pages from your passport. Past flight details may also be requested to confirm your travel history.
Japanese Study Certificate (150 Hours) or JLPT Certificate
Proof of Japanese language study is required. Applicants must submit either a Japanese study certificate showing at least 150 hours of study or a JLPT N5 (or higher) pass certificate. Self-study is not accepted; all study hours must be completed through a recognized school or structured program.
Birth Certificate (If Sponsored by a Family Member)
If a family member is sponsoring your studies, a birth certificate or other proof of relationship is required to verify the sponsorship relationship.
Required Japanese Student Visa Documents For The Financial Sponsor

You or your sponsor—who must be yourself or a family member—will need to prove that sufficient financial resources are available to cover your studies in Japan. A proof of relationship is required if a family member is acting as your sponsor.
The required amount depends on the length of your student visa. Since our programs support a minimum visa length of one year, applicants must demonstrate financial resources equivalent to at least 2.5 million yen in savings and/or annual income.
To verify this, you may request that your bank issue an official balance certificate or letter confirming the current account balance. Some schools may also accept online bank statements or printouts. In addition, you may be asked to submit your sponsor’s most recent bank statement and, in some cases, their latest income tax return.
Additional Documents for Japanese Student Visa Application
These documents may vary depending on who will be sponsoring your studies (yourself or a family member).
School’s Additional Forms
Each Japanese language school has its own application forms that must be completed. These may include enrollment forms, agreements, and other legally required documents.
Marriage Certificate
If your spouse will be sponsoring your studies, you must submit a marriage certificate to verify your relationship.
Business Registration Certificate or License
This is required if you or your sponsor owns a business to verify business ownership and income sources.
Doctor’s Note
A doctor’s note may be required to confirm that you are medically fit to live in Japan for an extended period. This is usually necessary only if you have an ongoing physical or mental health condition.
Payslips or Employment Certificate
Payslips may be submitted as proof of employment and income. Japanese immigration reviews these documents to prove that either or both of you are financially capable of supporting your stay in Japan.
If you or your sponsor is employed, you must also provide documentation confirming your current employment with the company. An official employment certificate or letter from the company is the most reliable proof.
Employment Certificate
An employment certificate confirming your or your sponsor’s current employment status may be requested separately from payslips.
While this may seem like a large number of documents, they are required so that both the school and Japanese immigration can confirm that applicants are academically, medically, and financially prepared to study and live in Japan.
Please understand that applying for a student visa means requesting permission to reside in Japan for an extended period, which is why thorough documentation is necessary.
