Our Story
Coto Japanese Academy began in 2000 as a group of volunteer Japanese language teachers in a small, one-bedroom apartment. From the beginning, our focus has been on more than just textbooks—we wanted to help people from international backgrounds improve their quality of life in Japan through language, opportunity, and community.
Building on this experience, we created Coto School Finder, a study abroad service by Coto Japanese Academy. As a trusted Japanese language school with decades of expertise, we understand what it takes to come to Japan to study Japanese—and we know how to make that journey smoother for every student. From choosing the right school to navigating applications and preparing for life in Japan, Coto School Finder is here to guide you every step of the way.
Why Coto School Finder?
It started at Coto Japanese Academy, our language school. As a short-term Japanese language school, we have met hundreds of motivated learners who dreamed of moving to Japan to study—but couldn’t find the right path. We knew there had to be a better way to support them.
That’s why we began partnering with some of the best Japanese language schools across the country. Acting as a bridge between you and the right school, we make the process of studying in Japan easier, clearer, and more transparent. To support your journey, we also provide free document translation and access to Coto Online courses—so you can start learning Japanese right away while preparing for your move.

Coto Academy& Coto Club
Our History
Iidabashi Japanese Language Institute established
We started offering mainly private lessons, in one room of an apartment in Iidabashi.
Nihongo Fun and Easy published
We published our first Japanese learning textbook Nihongo Fun and Easy.
Course for international residents created
Our Japanese language school created a 3-week intensive course for international residents in Japan.
Official corporation established
We established Be Unique Co., Ltd. as an official corporation! We began to create original teaching materials and started flexible group lessons called “Nihongo Plus”
Coto Japanese Academy rebranded
The team decided to expand and relocate our school. We finally rebranded to Coto Language Academy — the name we know today!
Coto Work opened
Opened Coto Work, the recruitment division of Coto World connecting tech companies with talented candidates.
Coto Japanese Club opened
Opened sister branch Coto Japanese Club in Azabujuban. We also published our second Japanese textbook, “Nihongo Fun & Easy 2”
Coto Online Japanese Academy launched
Due to popular demand, we launched Coto Online Japanese Academy to help those unable to travel to Japan. We also changed our corporate name to Coto World Co., Ltd.
Yokohama school opened
We opened our second Coto Academy school in Yokohama!
Coto School Finder launched
We launched Coto School Finder to help those wanting to study Japanese long-term with a student visa. Our first long-term students start on April 2023 session.
