You’ve lived in Osaka for six months now. How has it been?
It’s been amazing. Osaka has always stood out to me for some reason: the culture, the Kansai dialect, the friendly people. I’m going to a university in Kobe after this, and I’m so glad it’s still close to Osaka.
What’s the class like?
One word about the teachers: kibishii (strict). They don’t mess around when it comes to giving you grades, but that’s when you know you’re in good hands.
The class sounds intensive. How do you feel about that?
Strangely, I look forward to going to class every day. That says a lot. The lessons aren’t stiff. What I love about the teachers is that they always tell us about Japanese culture and society — and how to communicate the right way. It’s like everything we need to know about Osaka, from its dialect and people to the culture, we learn inside the classroom.
Who would you say this school is perfect for?
Someone who’s serious about their education and their long-term goal in Japan. A lot of us plan to go to university or vocational school, and the school really wants you to be 100% ready for life after school.
Plus, Osaka is such an underrated city: great food, warm locals and an overall amazing place. If you’re looking for a friendlier, livelier Tokyo, Osaka is the place for you.
It must have been tough the first time you come to Japan. How did the school support you?
I can’t stress how attentive and genuine the school has been in helping us. They managed the administration before I came to Japan, consulted me about finding the right part-time job and provided me with an apartment. When I first came to Japan, I had a sudden toothache. I talked to the teachers, and they immediately took me to the dentist. I consult with my teachers about other concerns and each time, I get the right advice.
Any favorite places you like to go to here?
Definitely Shinsaibashi. You can’t ask for anything more than cool shops and a lively atmosphere. I go there at least four times a month, and luckily it’s accessible.
You’re going to a university after this. Tell us what the course focus is right now.
We always start with the basics. Depending on your goal, like taking the J-Test, JLPT or EJU, you’ll dedicate a few hours of your classes to focus on the subject. That said, it’s not all theories and textbooks.
Any word of advice for people who want to study in Japan?
Follow your passion. Know what you want and just listen to your heart. We can’t know everything about the school, but you’ll most probably catch wind of how you really feel about a school. Loop International Japanese Language School exceeds my expectations, for that matters.
What’s it like teaching Japanese at Loop International Japanese School?
It’s a lot of fun. You get to see students learn something new and grow day by day. I’m glad I get to help them enjoy their life in Japan.
What do you value when teaching Japanese?
I value each student’s individuality. We get students from various countries, each one different than the other. I teach. Japanese in class, but inside, I still want them to be themselves.
How are the students here? Anything you feel accomplished about?
The most rewarding moments for a teacher? When students worked hard to pass an exam for a school of their choice — and succeed. All of them studied hard, and I couldn’t be more proud.
Who’s this school perfect for?
Someone who doesn’t just want to learn the Japanese language, but its culture and customs too. It’s always been our goal about helping students find their passion in Japanese society — and the global community.
What other things do you enjoy outside the classroom?
We have tons of extracurricular activities. We like to go sightseeing in Osaka and Kansai Region. Every summer, I’d go to the beach, have BBQs and ride a boat.
